The premise is based upon the situation established by the first movie. An alien entity is currently in some kind of stasis at the South Pole but if emerges will eliminate all biological life on this planet within a time span of 26 hours. The movie begins with news reports about the Norwegian then the American bases in Antarctica going silent. Rumors begin filtering back about some kind of possible outbreak. Then as the situation develops the word is that there is some type of possibly deadly extraterrestrial contagion loose at the South Pole. At this point a quarantine is set up around the continent 'Escape from New York' style. Nothing gets in or out, anything that tries gets shot out of the air. When they find out what is really going on then the situation changes. The militaries of the US, Russia and China meet and are deciding on whether they want to nuke the South Pole off of the map or not.
